Private Bank Reputation Tracking

October 8, 2026

Measuring Client, Prospect and Referrer Trust

This private bank reputation research built a standing measure of trust among

Key takeaways

  • Professional referrers carry a private bank’s reputation but are rarely measured.
  • Messages anchored in the trust drivers clients rank highest restore confidence; generic reassurance does not.
  • A continuous baseline is what makes a reputation shift visible early.

What problem was the client trying to solve?

A private bank came to us after a difficult year for its sector. Several competitors had been in the news for the wrong reasons, and the bank itself had faced questions about a regulatory matter that was resolved quietly. Clients had not left. But relationship managers reported more questions, longer conversations and a few referrals that did not arrive.

The bank had no way of measuring its reputation among the people who mattered: clients, prospects and the lawyers, accountants and family office principals who recommend it. It wanted a standing measure of trust that would catch a shift early - and tell it which messages actually restored confidence. Not a press monitor. A trust tracker.

Why is private bank reputation difficult to research?

Trust takes years to build and can shift in a single news cycle - usually before anyone inside the bank notices.

Clients rarely say they are worried

Concern shows up as hesitation, not complaint.

Referrers carry reputation

Professional advisors decide which banks to recommend, and their view is rarely measured.

Sector news spills over

Problems at competitors affect trust in the whole category.

Reassurance can backfire

Some messages restore confidence; others draw attention to the problem.

What did the research set out to answer?

The objective: Track trust, credibility and goodwill among clients, prospects and referrers on a continuous basis, identify what drives trust, and test which messages restore it.

  • Set a baseline. Measure trust across all three audiences.
  • Rank the drivers. Use MaxDiff to rank what builds trust in a private bank.
  • Hear the referrers. Interview lawyers, accountants and family office principals.
  • Catch shifts early. Add pulse waves when sector or bank news breaks.
  • Test the reassurance. Test which messages restore confidence and which backfire.

How did Amber & Bull research private bank reputation?

This was a Custom Research engagement led by Brand & Equity, centred on the Reputation & Trust Tracker, with Communications & Marketing supporting the message testing. It covers the Spark, Selection and Verdict stages of the Decision Arc.

Clients and prospects verified on investable assets; referrers verified by role and client base.

Phase 1: Baseline

First wave across clients, prospects and referrers.

Phase 2: Referrer Interviews

32 interviews on how referrers choose which banks to recommend.

Phase 3: Quarterly & Pulse Waves

Three further quarterly waves and pulse waves around news events.

Phase 4: Trust Dashboard

A trust dashboard with drivers, movement flags and message guidance.

What did the study recommend?

Four recommendations came out of the study.

  • Brief the referrers first - Referrers shape reputation and should hear from the bank before they hear from the press.
  • Lead with the trust drivers clients rank highest - Messages anchored in what clients value most restore confidence; generic reassurance does not.
  • Equip relationship managers for the conversation - Clients ask their banker, not the press office.
  • Keep the tracker running between events - A continuous baseline is what makes a shift visible.

Why does this approach work?

Private banks usually learn about reputation damage from flows, long after it happened. A standing tracker across clients, prospects and referrers shows a change in trust while it can still be managed.

Including the referrers - the people who decide which bank a new family hears about - closes a gap almost no reputation measure in the sector covers.
